Leadership
Learn More Guiding Principles for Technology Leadership Maintaining Focus – It is worth noting that when Bill Gates and Warren Buffet were asked what about their single greatest business challenge, they answered emphatically and in unison, “Focus”! A key goal is to help businesses undergoing rapid change augment existing management and technical resources “As Needed” with the goal of maintaining focus on critical initiatives. Incremental Improvement – Design in flexibility, cost control, and steady delivery of tangible benefits. Sabre approach allows for changing demands. 20/80 Considerations - 80% of the benefit often comes relatively easily. The last 20% can often cost much more. Sabre can help management distinguish between the “Low Hanging Fruit” and bleeding edge technology traps. Chaos Management – Making order out of chaos seems to be the earmark of the highly effective fast growing company. Sabre can help management define and manage projects, provide regular feedback and maintain improvement at a “Sustainable Pace”. Communication – Social Media, Big Data, diverse audiences, and the way our actions are perceived equal a communication challenge more significant than ever. Sabre can help management navigate the tools and services designed to help mitigate these risks while maximizing opportunity. Curiosity – With the “Half Life” of technical knowledge under 8 months, certifications and training classes are not enough. Continual curiosity and research help an organization remain technologically competitive. Sabre can help by sharing industry knowledge, regularly attending relevant workshops often at shared or no cost, and assisting with specific research projects. |
Perspective
Learn More Thoughts On The Changing Role of CIO and CTO Having filled the CIO / CTO role on three distinctly different occasions it is interesting to note that the terms CIO and CTO are often used interchangeably. Though they both ultimately involve the management of data, communications, technology, and processing systems, the roles vary widely regardless of title. What is always involved, in addition to an understanding of the data and technology, is an ability to understand the business mission. This means understanding the role of each part of the organization in support of that vision, the organizational dynamics at play inside and outside the organization, and an ability to work across functional boundaries relying on teamwork and incremental change to get the job done. Solving old problems with new ideas, applying tried and tested solutions to new problems, and communicating effectively throughout the organization is also all part of the job. Much like the conductor of a fine orchestra, the job of the CIO/CTO is to understand the strengths and limitations of the various technologies available both inside and outside the organization, when to use which "instrument", and find the best "players". Below is a sampling of areas where Sabre can help supplement the CIO or CTO function in a changing organization.
